Before dawn, Jesus was arrested and tried. Read the account in Matt.26:47-27:1 , Mark 14:43-15:1, Luke 22:47-71, and John 18:2-27.
Friday morning, Pilate decided that Jesus was to die. Read the account in Matt. 27:11-26, Mark 15:1-5, Luke 23:1-25, and John 18:28-19:16.
Finally Jesus was crucified. Read about it in Matt. 27:31-56, Mark 15:20-46, Luke 23:26-49, John 19:17-30.
We are told that after He was given a drink, “He bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” He emptied himself. Philippians 2:7 tells us that Jesus “emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant.”
It was a horrible emptiness, as Jesus gave Himself up. Imagine the pain of having all of mankind’s sin heaped on Him in that moment, forcing God to turn away from His own beloved. And yet it paid the penalty of sin in full as He suffered. It was a beautiful gift of emptiness, as it allowed mankind to be restored and made full. Beautiful emptiness!
