Not the only Jesus ...

Did you know it was not uncommon for Jewish families to name their sons "Jesus"? It was a name given to a son as a "symbolic hope for the Lord's anticipated sending of salvation through a Messiah" (ESV Study Bible) who would bring salvation from their oppression.

But the angel's words to Joseph in Luke 1:21 specifically say about Mary and the baby inside of her, "She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."

Our Savior was not the first boy to be given the name "Jesus," but he was the first and only one to fulfill the promise that he would save his people from their sins. THAT's why his name is a life changer!

John 1:12 "...to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God."

The ESV study Bible note says it so well ...

His name explains what he does: "God saves."

His title "Immanuel" tells who he is: "God with us."

Praying you know Jesus and that you are experiencing Immanuel today.

I'm just finishing a book by WT Wright, "The Challenge of Jesus." It is about how we bring the mission of Jesus into our world today. Great book! Your post made me think of it, so your post was great, too!
